hello everybody,
im new to chicks of my own i recently had the idea to start chickens myself after my dad having chickens for about two years now. I have a friend that is in the process of incubating 20 chicks for us. They will be rir or br. Im currently in the process of getting the chicken coop built. just got the brooder ready for there big day. i cant wait. we live in Yakima, Washington. Im so glad to have found this awesome site it has been so helpful in getting ideas for the coop and also what to do for my little ones. i have read about sand in the coop and shavings wondering if anyone has used dry den pellets? its what our local feed store is using for there baby chicks.

Hi! I'm pretty new to chicks, also. Ours are 6 weeks old and we've been using pine shavings without any sort of problems. It seems to me that the only drawback with regard to the pellets would be if they weighed significantly more than the shavings, remember you're gonna' be hauling the waste out frequently;-)

Hi there and welcome!

I'm not new to chickens. I'm not new to Washington. I'm not "new". I'm not even new to this site, but I did recently join. (Please not my join date and post count and take that as a warning.) I came here for one reason and one reason only: to obtain a decent Welsummer rooster and now look at me: I'm in the welcome thread, and I'm simultaneously in Boise, ID protesting abuse by chicken and vacuum owner ship!(See the emergency sub-forum to understand the joke/reference.) Now I'm a crusader and a welcomer.

I need to get back to my responsibilities . . . *heads to care for chickens OR go to bed*
