Hi everyone..

I recently rescued 5 hens & a rooster from Key West Florida. This is my first attempt at chickens. I am a farm girl from way back but have not ever had a chicken coop & chickens as an adult. 10x12 Coop, 10x16 enclosed run.

We built the coop added the enclosed run and we are on our way.
My research says that these chickens come from a cubalaya background.

I am interested in just watching them, collecting eggs and hatching a few chicks each year depending on room.

Any advice to a newbie?

Advice, hmm.. First of all you joined byc, there is tons of experts and newbies like yourself and read as much as you can. There are a couple of good books out, my favorites are "Story's guide to chickens", "the chicken health and disease book" I do have to warn you, chickens should really come with a warning label because.... they are ADDICTING! Once you have a few, you want more, than you want to have a try at incubating and you end up like me and have over 65 chickens running around.l Kidding aside, welcome and post often!

I was told that the cabbies down there, try to run them over when they see them in the street!

How did I rescue Key West Chickens?
Have been going to Key West every March for 5 years. It took 5 years to get DH to agree to getting chickens. He actually is having fun watching them.
This year learned of the indigeious park in Key West. This is where the chickens go when they are a nusance & the town is working to lower the # of chickens in the town. They send them north near Orlando. I called the farm and had them shipped overnight to me(sort of overnight) I will NEVER have adult birds shipped again. Lost 2 in the process. I will be picking up the 2 replacements next March - not chancing death again.

I am thinking that I can house up to 16 chickens but Cubalayas do not like to be crowded. So I am hoping they can handle 13 (12 hens & 1 rooster).

I want to add couple of Araucana's but thru chicks growing up here. I found 2 week old chicks may call about them tomorrow.

P.S. We also are very active in Greyhound Rescue. I am very excited that our pack (3 greyhounds) handled the coop & chicken addition all in stride. My greyhound friends are amazed that they haved handled it so well. We enclosed the outside pen with chicken wire then added 3 foot welded wire as a protection for greyts & chickens. The coop sits inside our large fenced area. We do not leave greyhounds unattended in the garden area where the coop is anyway. Our cat is terrified of the chickens and will not come within 20 feet of the coop. As for the chickens they could care less who is looking at them they just keep exploring.
