North Central Florida
Hi,
I introduced myself on someone else's thread. Sorry. I really want to be a good egg, but sometimes I get a bit scrambled.
We are in central Florida. Three humans, three dogs, Three greenhouses, two gardens, and 24 Buff Orpingtons. They are new too.
It has been raining non-stop for a longtime. Day 11. We moved the two week old chicks into a bigger container (the dog crate with cardboard stapled to the sides so they won't try to squeeze through) and they were damp. They are scurffy anyway because they are getting their feathers...should I worry? We clean the cage and put down dry paper two to three times a day. It is just that EVERYTHING is damp. Too much 'shaboom' in the rain dance.
Thank you all. This seems like a nice place.

Hi and welcome from Florida's Treasure Coast!! I lived in Orlando for years and know what you mean about the dampness in May. Land O' Lakes is actually Land O' Swamp! ha. May and June are always rainy. You will get rain midday, usually everyday. It will subside by end of June. It has been bone dry in Florida. Governor declared a State of emergency in some counties in lieu of fires early last week and the same for floods this week. I think if you try and keep coop and area open to air circulation and sun (when it is out) the chix should be alright. I am not an expert so maybe someone with better experience will welcome you to the greatest forum ever:D.

Hi and

from Ohio. What kind of paper are you using? You say damp, but it sounds like they are wet. Are they protected from the rain? They are old enough to be on some shavings. It will help keep them dryer. My only worry about being damp is sickness and diseases caused by humid weather. I pray for dryer weather.

I was born and reared here in Florida, so I am used to the bizarre weather. But..eeech.
The chicks are in the house. They are damp because everything is damp.
The week of rain stopped the coop & run building. Plywood does not like rain...or maybe it does, because it is doing the 'wave.'
After I posted, My chicks were fine...just damp, and then an hour later they were being pecked bloody. I had a feeling something was going to happen, I just did not know what. I have been searching the posts for answers, and I think I have a few that will help me. This is a wonderful site. Thank you all for your greeting!
(Funny, I got Orps because someone discribed them to me as the 'golden retrievers' of the chicken world. Blood thirsty goldens, I guess.)
