I live in NE Wyoming and Heavy Breeds seem to work just fine. I try to stay away from breeds with combs though due to frost bite. I don't keep the coop heated in the winter, only run a heat lamp over their water dish. I have been running chickens up here for about 4 years with no problem in the winter (except for the weaker/older chickens).
