Hi all, Im Ginwae, or Gin as you prefer. From Wyoming. We're not far outside Cody, on the north side.
Figured I would post my introduction and tell you a bit about me and my life since I am new to the site.
First of all, you already know my name and location. My family is a bit on the feather-brain side as our life is pretty much bird related in every way. My father runs a raptor preservation and rehabilitation center, we also hunt using various birds of prey and I have a new goshawk for this year, she will be 1 in June. Her name is Mira, which is latin for Wonderful.
My mother does egg art using everything from ostrich to finch eggs, normally working in pysanky style but also working scrimshaw style and wax layering. She also paints on feathers and has sold several to museums in the USA and Canada, as well as online to private owners looking for a unique piece of art. She's been doing different arts and crafts most of her life, but started on eggs and feathers a few years after I got into poultry.
I breed and raise numerous oriental, rare or just plain odd chickens, have color programs going for Paduan, Wyandotte, Orpington, Cochin, Chabo and Old English Games, and I breed, raise, race and show fancy Pigeons. I also have a small group of young Chocolate Turkeys, Midget/Beltsville White Turkeys, Lady Amherst Pheasants and white Sebastopol Geese. None of them are old enough to breed yet as they are all new for this year, but I hope to start breeding and growing my flocks soon enough!
I've been involved in chickens since 1998, and have always been drawn to the rare breeds such as Appenzeller Spitzhauben, Penedesenca, Empordanesa, longtails and longcrowers. I started in Old English Games in 2000 as a 4H project working with a Crele trio. I hit every show I could with those birds until 2001, then they were retired to breeding until 2007 at which time they were culled.
I am now soon-to-be 21 years old and not a day has gone by since that first crele trio that I have not had chickens. Some of my favorite breeds are Tomaru Longcrowers, Frizzle Cochin Bantams and Paduan. Paduan were my first "odd" breed, and Frizzle Cochins were not far behind. The Tomaru are only music to my ears as my parents both despise them and require me to keep them far from the main house. lol.
My current favorite color program is my lemon cuckoo Orpingtons which I have been working with for almost 2 years. I'm also working on the self-blues... or lavendar... types, as well as blue laced in both Orpington(project) and Wyandotte(fine-tuning). As well as some oddball project colors for Paduan and Chabo.
I'm hoping to get some more Black Penedesenca, some more male Exchequer Leghorns and some White LaFleche Bantams this year. I'm also trying to find some Black Sebastopol and Midnight Peafowl. I'm in the process of building more raised pens and ground runs, but should have those done by July! We're also going to be fencing in an additional 5 acres of range run for the pheasants.
Well, that about covers me! I'll be looking over the site and commenting here and there. Looking forward to "meeting" you all!!
