Hello my name is Deborah and my boyfriend is Freddy he wanted some egg layers, so we ordered some chicks from E fowl 14 females one Rooster. We ordered some brown egg layers, Black Australorp we read all of the breeds and they sound hardy and can lay up to or above 250 eggs each if the conditions are optimistic. I am excited but did not realise that their was so much to worry about my Grandmother never had a problem she always had more than enough eggs and meat.I still remember her Bannie Rooster chasing me around the chicken yard trying to spur me as nd peck me I would hide behind her. She would tell me to shoo him away but I would wrap up in her huge skirt's it was after all 1964 and she was a Grandma with her huge white aprons she would fill up with feed to scatter all over the yard.Great memories. Now Freddy knows chickens so he will be teaching me and I hope to learn a lot and am very happy I found this site and hope to make new friends that know their chickens:) We live in the mountains of extremism Northern California in Happy Camp. A rugged country I hope we made the right choice in Chickens..We will be receiving our new chicks next week....I hope they grow and multiply healthy..I believe that having and raising animals is a serious responsibility Thank You all.

Welcome to BYC, Deborah! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Black australorps are great chickens! One of my personal favorites. I learned most all my chicken knowledge from my grandma as well. She always had a few australorps on the farm. They are excellent layers and do lay around 250-275 eggs a year!

We are glad you joined this site! Feel free to ask any questions you may have. Hope you and Freddy have a good chicken raising experience!

Hi :welcome Deborah and Freddy

Glad you could join the flock! I have loved reading your intro and how yiu were chased by your Grandmas rooster! It brought back memories for me of being chased by the guard geese at a friends when I was a kid. Looking back now I think how was I so scared of a goose!! But when your small those geese seem very large. Good luck with your chicks, raising them is a super experience and lots of fun I personally can't get enough of cute little fuzzy butts.
The learning centre is a great place to begin for lots of great articles as drumstick diva said https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

Welcome to BYC, Deborah and Freddy. Glad you decided join our flock. Black Australorps are a great choice; my favorite standard breed. I've raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds), and they are extremely hardy, calm and gentle (my children and granddaughter made lap pets of them), and the best layers of the standard, brown egg laying breeds. A Black Australorp holds the brown egg laying record with 364 eggs in 365 days, and while none of mine have ever reached that level of productivity (and likely never will), I've still had a few of them lay over 300 eggs in a year. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your Black Australorps.
