(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am new to chickens and purchased my first chicks from our local feed store on 3/4/2021.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Currently have 33 chickens
(3) What breeds do you have?
12 Buff Orpingtons, 2 of them are roos. 11 Black Australorps, all hens. 9 Silkies, 1 roo and 8 hens. 1 random Golden Sebright roo.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I really enjoy everything about it!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Gardening... not sure what else I do that is considered a hobby.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
My name is Amanda, I am a happily married mother of 2 beautiful little girls. We live on a happy little 5 acres and are surrounded with the best neighbors anyone could ask for.
We have 4 dogs:
3 year old yellow lab named Daisy
2 year old red beagle named Bisket
12 year old Cocker Spaniel mix named Luke
7 year old red husky named Gizmo.
We have 2 cats:
2 year old diluted tortie named Hope (who is very pregnant)
brown tabby named Henry, not sure how old he is (maybe 2yo or 3yo), he came to us a few months ago.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
For a good long time, before I actually got our chickens, I had been researching what all goes into keeping chickens. I really wanted them initially as an extra source of meat and for their eggs. Quickly changed my mind after I got them that we will not be harvesting them for meat. I will see how I feel about that down the road. During my research I found this lovely website and began combing through all the forums. I learned a lot on here as well as from other sources. I only just recently created an account to be able to interact with everyone. I would love to share my learning experiences and pictures of my chooks and pets as I learn as well.
