Hello everyone, I am a newbie and am using the helpful template your website provides for Introduction of the people new to your community.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am new to chickens and have finally taken the plunge after many years of thinking it’s going to be too difficult. Started this adventure on March 01, 2019.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I have four happy, growing chicks/chickens (not sure at what age can I call them a chicken). I got them from Tractor Supply on 03/01/19. I believe the store had started stocking them 02/25/19. I was trying to figure out their birth date, and believe chicks get shipped a day after hatching (not sure)? So maybe hatched out 02/21/19????
(3) What breeds do you have?
All four of them are Australorps. I went specifically for that breed because they are supposed to be gentle, quiet and good egg layers. I did a lot of research to narrow down the choices.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I love the outdoors, and animals (except for the no-see-ums, and mosquitos). Chickens seem so happy and are actually entertaining to watch. These chickens are my pets, and I am looking forward to collecting their eggs when they are old enough (not being raised for meat).
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Gardening, hiking, camping, thrift shopping, just being outside to enjoy nature.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I have a hubby, two grown children - one in NY, and the other lives nearby, two dogs.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
Found BYC while researching to try and know what I was getting into prior to finally getting my own chicks.
It is true, BYC has an awesome community. Everyone is so nice and helpful. By what I am reading, I’ve come to the conclusion that people who raise chickens are just great all around nice folk. Other online communities unfortunately have such nasty, unhappy people making snide remarks.
So I get a good feeling when I get on your website and read the postings.
There is such a wealth of information in your community, it’s helped give me the courage to take the plunge.
Also a man at the New Port Richey Tractor Supply (I forgot his name) helped to also get me to take that big step to get my chicks. He told me his wife raises chickens so I was thankful I was able to actually speak to someone experienced. His taking the time to answer my questions reassured me I was doing the right thing, and pointed me in the right direction the day I started this wonderful journey.
