Welcome to BYC!
Sounds like a lovely little family of pets you have there! How did you acquire the battery hens?
Hi Abriana & thank you. I got my battery hens through the British hen welfare trust, the uk is pretty big on rescuing ex batts at the moment so there is quite a surge in people keeping backyard flocks. Some people will go to farms where they know battery hens are kept & ask to buy them, the farmers get more money selling their battery hens this way than waiting to sell them at the time of slaughter (16/18mths old).

That's great! Glad you were able to save them. Poor hens...

Yes they really are the friendliest birds, all mine have died now but i do miss them. It's hard when they die so young, battery farming is really cruel.

Yes, it is awful. We got our ten last July and only have four left. All have died of "natural" causes except our favorite, mrs.tittlemouse was killed by a hawk last fall. She was the best. Would come sit on my lap every morning while I had coffee on the porch.

I remember when I went to pick them up I had no idea how truly awful they would look. I had our kids with me and we were all just totally shocked. But we got them home, loved on them a bunch, and they blossomed into happy healthy little girls!

I went with my 2 daughters to get ours, one of them had hardly any feathers, she was practically oven ready, we called her Babs & she grew the most beautiful feathers, they all seemed to blossom & look amazing just before they died. I will get some more but i just need to give my heart a rest from losing them so soon.
