Hello BYC Community! My name is Jackie and I’m from PA. I’m a stay at home mom to 2 children. An 8 year old boy and 3 year old girl. I have come across BYC many times when I’m “googling” chicken questions and I figured it was probably just time to join the community considering I have a flock and always plan to have a flock. I’m hoping to take away many helpful tips and tricks for my ladies to make sure they get everything they need and deserve! I have had my girls (and guy) for 2 years come next month (March 2017). I currently have 5 chickens. I did have 7 but last week while my chickens were free ranging I lost 2. Needless to say I was devastated. They had only been out for a little over an hour before I noticed a strange dog down in the wooded area of my home. When I took off running to get the dog I then noticed 2 of my girls missing; I saw some wing feathers of the one, but nothing of the other. I don’t know if the dog was reasonable or something else. The dog was very friendly and actually turned out to be a farm dog that came from a farm with 70 chickens so the owner said. I’m still very upset about this whole incident. The unknowing drives me insane exp when I check on them constantly when they are out. I’ve felt like a chicken mom failure. They aren’t “just chickens” to me; they are my little crew that I have taken care of everyday since they were 2 days old. They know who I am and always run up to me when I’m outside and follow me around like puppies. But in the end, I know this tends to happen during free range. Anyway, my now current flock consists of 2 silkie girls, and a silkie rooster who is a handful. I also have a Plymouth Rock and Wyandotte Golden. The ones I lost were my Wyandotte Silver and my Austrlop. We have the Hens for egg laying and my silkies just because I wanted them and they are my cuddle ladies. They allow my children to hold them and carry them around. My silkie rooster was a surprise in the mix. I knew there was a chance I would get one considering they didn’t come sexed. Anyway, I will end my LONG intro here. I’m happy and excited to finally be a part of the community and look forward to everything that comes along with it. :)
