Before I answer the questions below, I think I should answer the question that my username probably raised. Why is a vegetarian and/or vegan (that's what veg*n means

) and card carrying member of the organization that Ingrid N. runs (ATEP) interested in raising chickens? The answer is: I'm married to an omnivore who refuses to give up eating eggs and I object to him buying factory farmed eggs. So we're going to solve part of our "Omnivore's Dilema" by raising our own pet chickens who will give him eggs in exchange for a nice life (roomy place to live, access to the backyard and good food.) If we ever get our own little acre in the country, we'll have a goat for the milk and God only knows what other animals will come to live with us. "Ethical treatment" doesn't mean no animals in your life at all!

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? I'm new to chickens but my husband grew up on a farm and helped take care of their birds. We will be getting our first ones this Saturday, March 27.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now? We'll be getting four.

(3) What breeds do you have? The breeds will be Rhode Island Red, Americauna, and Barred Rocks. I think that it'll be two Americauna's and one each of the other two.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com? I googled "pet chickens" and "backyard poultry".

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Reading, letterboxing www.letterboxing.org, beading, cross-stitch.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
My husband and I have each other and five cats (yeah, problematic for chicken raising but I think they'll leave the chickens alone once the birds are big enough to roam outside the coop and the cats have been blasted with the squirt bottle enough times.) He's a Math teacher at a charter school in San Antonio, TX. We live in Uvalde and he commutes so when we find the right place closer to but not in the city, we'll move.

from Texas, and if you just keep a good watch when they are young they will be fine with cats when they get bigger.

My chickens chase cats all the time.
