The nest boxes should be inside a protected area if they have a Momma and chicks roosting in them! I use modified plastic milk crates(app 150 of them)and they work great.

What would hep us is to know what kind of predators you may be dealing with and where you are located.

Generally, the lid needs to be heavy enough that it can be lifted by you but not easily lifted by a raccoon. I also place c-clip latches that hold things down.

The best thing if you are dealing with predators that crawl into the coop is electric fence, especially if you are out in the open country with a lot of wild life.

In my area, it is hawks that are my number one killer. My mother and babes are in a netted and wired run until the babes are big enough so that a hawk can't fly by and hawl them off. I've got some grow outs now that are about 12 weeks old, that are almost big enough for me to let free range with the rest.

Regular chicken wire can been easily torn apart by a coon and squeezed through by a rat. Hardware cloth is the answer there as well as digging down 3 to 4 feet and burying your wire/cloth.

Coops are ideally fully enclosed and raised to prevent digging under.

Those are general ideas, but it would help to know what you may be dealing with and where your location is.
