Hey there!

I'm fairly new to this "Chicken World" but I have a deep love and passion for birds and my husband and I are looking to start a flock up sometime in the near future (Especially since we are leaving out of state and will be near one of his brothers who already owns a flock of chickens). I'm so eager to learn about these lovely birds and do look forward to starting up my very own small group of them.

I currently already own two Doves as pets. They are so lovely and have personalities all on their own. I used to breed Diamond Doves for a period of time, and it was a very rewarding and a good learning experience. (Though they are different types of birds altogether-) I'm now aiming towards chickens!

So I still need some time to explore these forums and learn a good deal, but are there any suggestions for good starting breeds that are great for laying and are good for hard winters? I'm still fairly new to chickens and would love to learn about all the different breeds that are out there. What are the most common breeds? What about suggestions for how large a coop should be?

The first breed of chickens I've ever laid eyes on was a beautiful Sebright. I'd love to learn about these gorgeous fellows as well.

A little off topic- I love art and draw and paint as a hobby, drawing all sorts of monsters and creatures (Typically feathered birdy beasts).

What can I say, I love my art and birds. They are so great. <3 And I'm eager to get started on learning.

Hi,

The best place to start is the Learning Center. There are articles about all sorts of poultry topics there that will help you get off on the right foot:

As far as the most highly rated breeds by BYC members, you can take a look at the breed reviews, then you can sort by highest rated:

Right now, the Orpingtons, Australorps, and Plymouth Rocks come up as the top 3 most popular. Of course, you'll want to select the breed that best suits your needs so don't go just by what's popular. Sebrights are beautiful chickens so read up on those, maybe they're the right one for you.

Have fun learning and if you have questions, feel free to ask. There are a lot of friendly, helpful members here.

Thanks for joining us!

Sebrights are bantams and you wouldn't get many eggs from them. Generally red or black sex links are the best layers for the first two years or so and then slow down considerably. Have you visited the Learning Center?

Thank you guys :)

Thanks for the tip on the laying Chickens, I want to go ahead and look into them. I'll be checking out the learning center now :D
