Hi all...N GA here and have found this place very helpful. Thought I would join up and share. We have 10 girls and got a baby rooster about 3 weeks ago. He is still separated from the girls as they tend to pick on him horribly! Anyway, I do enjoy my girls! Looking forward to learning from everyone =)

Please keep the baby roo away from them until he is nearly their size and can stand up to them. In the meantime you can partition part of the run/coop with wire, so they can see and get used to him but, cannot harm him. In time they will think he belong with them. Welcome to BYC

Welcome to BYC!

Drumstick Diva X2 Leave the baby separated but within the flock until he is about the same size as the rest of the flock. When he is, you can mix him in. He is way too small and will get picked on at this age.

Enjoy all your poultry adventures and welcome to our flock!

Hi everyone and thank you! I do have him separate but in the coop with the girls. I keep telling them this is their man and they look at me like I have lost it, lol. I usually take him out in the yard with
me several times a week and let him pick at the ground. Tonight I had him (he has taken to getting on my shoulder) and while he was sitting there I heard him panting. Not labored breathing, but just panting. He would do it then just stop. Then do it again. He seems perfectly healthy and is growing like a weed. No noticable problems or indications of anything wrong. He also made this trilling noise tonight. Never heard that one before. I wondered if that is normal behavior for him? I had two cornish rocks that panted, but they were like goliaths... we had to put them in the freezer, they got to where they couldn't walk. We didn't know they were meat birds when we bought them, or we wouldn't have. Any suggestions? Thanks.
