Hello! New to raising chickens in Oklahoma......

For several years I have been thinking about getting a few hens for my urban garden. I have a good sized back yard which includes an organic vegetable and butterfly garden. I would like to start with 6 hens and a portable coop. I'm open to any advise on which breeds would be good here in OK and any tips you'd like to share!
I love animals. I currently have 3 cats. I'm an elementary school librarian and part-time artist. I have 2 children and a grandson who is almost 2. I know he'll love helping with the new chickens!
I'm glad I found this forum and look forward to learning from everyone here!
