I’m from Northwest Indiana the southern tip of Lake Michigan.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am still new to chickens, I have had 6 Rhode Island Reds before that was 3-4 years ago. My son was the reason I got into them. He’s 16 now and could care less lol this yea is my first time for Quail tho. I have 15 chickens, and 33 Quail now. Smh... I should have started with 10 quail I think.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I now have 15 total chickens. But I didn’t hatch them, I didn’t buy from a store or hatchery either. A local farm that hatched them, but couldn’t give me any information about what breeds they are.
(3) What breeds do you have?
I’m not really sure what they are. I do know that 10 of the Quail are Jumbo Japanese something or other.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
At first me and my son had a great time doing everything together. Building the brooder, and the coop.. now it’s more or less just my thing now. But I still really just like birds, and we eat and cook with lots of eggs. I don’t like store bought eggs at all tho.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
i love to go camping, fishing, Hunting, and spending time with my son. And my Girlfriend of 4 years. Soon to be fiancé. But she hates my birds!! Lol
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We have a beagle, he is a hunting dog, rabbits, and raccoon, and birds just as his hobby. My girlfriend is like my complete opposite yet best friend, and her 7 year old son is into the same stuff as I am and looks at me more like his Dad. My son is a 16 year old about to get his license and full of teenager... lol he is going to the USMC in a little less than 2 years now.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I have seen it online before, but only because my son told me about it probably 3 years ago I think. But I didn’t really use the internet a whole lot for things like this. I’m currently looking at possibly getting my first incubator, and attempting my first hatch. I’m not sure if I’ll be doing my own, or if I will order them from somewhere. I hear eBay is not really a good choice.. but online there is plenty of different options to order eggs from. Also I have no idea what my newest chickens are... if anyone could help me with that to begin with. I’d really appreciate that! They are just about 6-7 weeks old right now. I will include a few pics of them. I can add some better ones as soon as I take some more pics of them. The last picture is of the first 10 quail when I first got them. I will add some of them also as soon as I get some new pics. They are the same age.. still no eggs from them yet tho.
