I am currently trying to pass an ordinance allowing chickens in Rathdrum. Yes, I know......for those of you who know how big (haha) our little town is, it gives one a pretty good laugh that chickens aren't allowed in what was once a mostly farming town. I have already brought it before the city council, and they are currently reviewing the pros and cons. So, our next meeting is on Nov. 9th. Three of the council members seemed pretty receptive to the idea. The fourth one, well....not so much. Any advice for me in helping to pass this would be greatly appreciated!

Hi neighbor! We're kind of quietly working on things here in the Spokane Valley, and Spokane County. Currently, in Spokane Valley, 3 hens are alllowed if you have at least 1 acre. Yep, apparently 3 small birds need that much space

There are a couple of folks--perhaps you've seen the stories in the Spokesman Review or on KREM last month--who are trying to get the restrictions loosened up a bit to allow more backyard chickens.

In Spokane County where I live (just 1 block outside city of Spokane Valley), no chickens are allowed in the low density residential zones. The City of Spokane and also the city of Millwood both allow chickens in the city limits. You might look up their ordinances or perhaps contact someone on the city councils there so see how things are working out for those cities, so you could present the info to your city council. I'm hoping that Spokane Valley eventually eases their restrictions on chickens, and then I might approach the county and try to get them to follow suit. Currently I'm just "flying under the radar" with my 3 hens in Greenacres. Good luck!
