My name is Crystal and I am a chickenholic. Lol.
My husband and I talked about getting chickens for awhile and about 2 years ago, i woke up and said today was the day. I didn't give him a chance to say no really. So we piled in the car and headed for Strasburg where a lovely lady sold us a chick broader starter set and 5 chicks. Now, i thought we were getting a silver laced wyandot, a barred rock and several EE but we actually ended up with 2 buff Orpington and a barred rock (we lost 2 of the first babies). We went to a local feed store about a week later and picked up a few RIR that were 2 weeks old giving us a total of 5 girls. Now, my husband thinks he is an outlaw so we have Waylon, Willie, Jesse, Capt. Spaulding and Duck Twacy. Now that was 2 years ago and alot has changed since then.
One of the Orpington girls went broody and after talking to my sister, we decided we would get 6 babies to put under her. 1 for us and she would take 5. We lost 2 and my sister changed her mind when the girls were a little older so now we have 8 girls and 2 coops. Unfortunately Capt. Spaulding (the broody) became ill once the babies were about 6 mos old and didn't make it. That story will involve lots of tears so we will leave it at that. The babies are RIR, bared rock, Rhode Island White and a black australorp. Their names are Gretchen, Heidi, Red and Tanya Clucker.
We found BYC when our Orpington got sick. We looked to other chicken owners for help and guidance on dealing with her.
Our.other hobbies include gardening, drag and NASCAR racing, baseball and college football.
It's just us and our furry/feathered friends. No time for kiddos when you have so much fun with all the other babies!
