About the hens:
This is our first time to have chickens we picked up our birds on Wednesday (4/10/13).
We have five hens (hopefully) that we purchased from The Barnyard in Newport, NC. They were all hatched in February at different times. At The Barnyard they said if we end up with a rooster, they'll let us bring him back and switch out.
I'm not sure about breed and the seller wasn't too sure on them either, as her hens and roosters mix it up a bit. We know we have a frizzle. As for the rest, maybe some helpful members here can provide an idea.
About the coop:
We built the coop under the girls' treehouse. A neighbor did the same thing and it worked well. I found someone who had recently gotten rid of his 150 chickens and he let me tear out a portion of their penned area. I was able to built the coop and yard for $0 investment! It ain't pretty, but I think it'll do the job. The coop portion is roughly 18 sq. ft. The nesting boxes are an old rabbit hutch attached to the coop so I could put doors on the outside (I haven't added the doors yet). The run is 15x15. Partly roofed, partly netted on the top.
About us:
I'm a web designer, the wife is a personal chef and tour guide out to Shackleford Banks. She takes people out to see the wild horses!
We have two girls - McKinzie and Claudia. We homeschool the girls - this should be a fun experience for them as well.
Two rabbits - Butter McScotchy (Lionhead mix) and Sir Hopkins (Dwarf mix).
One cat - Patches was a stray that adopted us.
Laura picked this one. She the largest right now.
This hen was my choice. I named her Chicken Joe.
Kiki was picked out by Claudia, who is helping the chickens pose today.
Laura picked out Lizzy. She's a Frizzle. She's the smallest and most docile.
McKinzie picked out Oreo.
