I have just become a member with backyard chickens! I am so glad to be a member. I live in NY which is a very urban state with few farms. Though this is an urban area I am still going to raise white homing pigeons soon and Coturnix quail. I hope that you will not mind me asking questions. Most of you, will most likely consider me a newbie but I actually know quite a few things about birds and specific care. However, I can always use a few tips from you guys. I love to plan for the future, so with that being said I would be most appreciative if you guys can clue me in on some tips for raising Chickens and Guinea fowl in the forums section. I know how useful chickens and guineas can be. However, I do not know anybody that currently raises gray pearl guineas. Therefore, I would like to know if raising Guinea fowl would be recommended in an urban area. I have heard that they are like watchdogs and occasionally may crow. I do not wish to disturb the neighbors in any shape, way or form. Thank you for your time. I look forward to having numerous conversations with you guys.

Hi and welcome from the Poconos

Hello and welcome from Ohio....so glad you are a member too. I used to have guineas and they were quite noisy. Good luck to you on whatever you decide to raise.

Welcome to BYC :) I live in NY as well and will say that NY is not very urban with very few farms. There are TONS of farms in New York and a great amount of New York is very rural.

You should check out both of the NY threads in the "Where Am I, Where are You" section of BYC. There are a lot of locals that could point you in the right direction.

If you live in an urban area (depending on how urban) I'd stay away from guineas. They are noisy, scatterbrained and having lived with them on a farm.... I would say they do not help a bug situation like people think they do.

Depending on how urban...chickens may not be an ideal pet for ya, either. I saw your post in the quail section. If you go for Coturnix, I'd get only females. The males may bother your neighbors. They are VERY messy, even with a hutch.

Welcome to BYC.....maybe I'll see ya around in one of the New York threads!
