Hello! I'm new to the site, but have had chickens off and on for years. I currently have one mixed breed rooster and 8 hens: (I think I have the breeds correctly named) 1 black australorp, 2 aracaunas(sp?), 2 brahmas, and 3 buff orpingtons, so it's a mixed coop! I also have 5 guineas in with them that I plan to free range later, and will probably free range the chickens too, at least for a few hours each day once I've had them for a while. My flock dwindled this spring down to the black australorp hen and the rooster due to predators. I now have a much bigger and more secure coop and have been building the flock back up over the summer.

I am married and have two married stepdaughters, a son in college, and a toddler step granddaughter. I am a school teacher, pastor's wife, and volunteer firefighter / EMT. I also have dogs and cats, and love having my chickens!

I did plan to throw out a question as well, so here it is: Today one of the Brahma hens was standing in the nesting box that they all seem to prefer... just standing there with her tail facing the exit into the coop, not sitting on the eggs, not laying an egg, but had two eggs pushed to either side of her, and just stood there doing nothing. I found her like that when I got home from work and went back out to check about 20 minutes later, and nothing had changed. I went outside and opened the nesting box and she still didn't move... just stood there looking at me. So for the moment I decided to leave her alone, but it seemed very odd behavior to me. I have never seen this. Has anyone else, and do any of you have any guesses as to what is going on? Is she sick or something, or getting ready to start brooding? I've never had any success with brooding, but most of these are pretty new birds to me, so whether or not they will be broody remains to be seen. Any ideas? Thanks!

Maybe she is trying to pass a large egg. The others could have been laid by different hens using the nest box. You will want to keep an eye on her in case she is egg bound. Is she eating, drinking and pooping normally?

I saw her drink, but haven't observed the eating or pooping. I haven't been home much either, so it's hard to say.
