I've just made my account and thought I'd answer the prompted questions.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am new and an aspiring keeper! I will hopefully have some before winter hits.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Sadly, zero, but I may have one or two soon!
(3) What breeds do you have?
Again, the unfortunately low number of zero.
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
It was recommended to me.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Taking care of my plants and playing video games, hopefully this will lead me to being more constructive.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I have a dog and a cat (Both will be kept well separated from the ladies, no need to fret!) I am currently still in school.

:welcome glad to have you join us.

Is there a reason you want to get started at the beginning of winter? It is a lot easier to start in the spring so you can move them to a permanent outdoor home in warmer weather.

1 or 2 are not as happy as 3 or more - chickens prefer being in flocks. But there are a lot of folks who have had good results even with one.

Good luck with your plans and new adventure. Do research the links Ken has given you. Feel free to post questions in the forums - you'll find folks here happy to help.

:welcome

x2 on sunflour's tip about getting more than 1 or 2 chicks, 3+ will be better for the little flock (and more fun for you).

Thanks for joining us!

I was hoping to get started before winter set in, but it seems like it's starting early this year and I may be forced to wait until next spring.
I'd love to have three or more chickens, but as I'm a new flock leader and I'm a bit short on space, It would be best to have fewer hens. I'd rather have a few hens than cramped hens!
