Hello everyone,

I picked up my first chicks about a week ago. 7 girls (hopefully). I had some trouble deciding on a breed or two and came home with 2 Easter eggers, 1 Welsummer, 1 australorp, 1 Light Brahma, 1 Barnevelder, and a Cuckoo Maran. All about 3 weeks old at the time.

I have them in makeshift brooder of cardboard boxes taped together with wire mesh over top , had to add the mesh after day 3 when they got a little flighty. I'm thinking of adding and extension to it today as they seem a bit crowded. We have a new coop and covered run ready for them outside as soon as the weather is a warmer. I hope to give them some free range time in the yard when they are older and I am confident that they might go back in the run/coop on their own at night or at least be easily handled.

I live on the west coast of Canada. My household includes me, my husband two teenage boys, two dogs, a cat and our 7 new chicks. This is my first go at keeping chickens but my husband has had some experience with them as a child as he grew up on a ranch.

I've been lurking a lot here the last month or so and thought it was time to join in. I will probably have some questions in the very near future.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Sounds like you have a lovely flock, and you picked some great breeds. :thumbsup Easter Eggers are one of my personal favorites; I have one and she is my prettiest, best laying hen out of my five birds.

I'm glad you finally decided to join our community! Our Learning Center is packed full of useful information, and the friendly members here on BYC are happy to help in any way we can. So feel free to ask any questions you may have.

Enjoy your new flock and welcome to ours. :)

I am hoping the you have lots of success in the "chicken field!" I also want to tell you that you're not the only one that feels like it takes forever for the chickens to lay eggs!!:barnie
