Hello,

My name is Leah and I just started my chicken caretaking in February of this year (2018). I have 5 chickens and I’m not 100% sure what each one of them are breed wise. I also have indoor cat and a dog who can’t be running around with the chickens because he already tried to kill one. My reasoning behind caring for chickens is because of the benefit of fresh eggs. I’ve wanted to have chickens for about 3-5 years now and this year I finally took the plunge. So far it’s been a challenge caring for them. The summer has been hot so it’s been a little rough for them and myself included. I have had some issues already with mites, cats, my dog, I’ve had pastry butt issues, eye infections, my one chicken had bread stuck in her throat and the newest is my one little chicken has a prolapsed vent. Which I’m hoping she will be okay after a day or two of relaxing and separation. This chicken care taking has been rough so far. I don’t know how some of you have more than 5. What they give back is so rewarding but I never realized how much work it would be. This website has helped me tremendously already. Thank you and Cheers everyone!

Only recently have chickens become pets more than the livestock that they are actually categorized under. With livestock- there is dead stock, sickness-wellness, social orders and dysfunction. It's hard to imagine how things are until you actually do those things yourself.
Sorry about the crash course in chicken 101. It gets better. Way better. Before you know it, you will be a seasoned pro. Thanks for joining and sharing.
