I’m new to chickens. I got my first flock in February. I preordered Black Australorp chicks from a local store. They picked them up from a local farm the day they hatched and I picked them up from the store the same day. They were sexed accurately and now I have three pullets. I’m in the city and can’t have a rooster, so that was a relief. Even though I’m in the city, we have raccoons, hawks, eagles, coyotes and possums. I love my sweet Australorps. Our chickens are pets with the benefit of eggs and fertilizer. They are about 13 weeks old now. My husband and I are not builders, but we designed and built a coop/run combo using the Wichita design that we altered to fit our needs. We are proud of how it came out! We like doing things ourselves. Some of my other hobbies are gardening, baking, camping and I’m a new ham radio operator. We also have a 10 year old Heeler/Australian Shepherd mix and a 17 year old cat. I don’t trust the dog with the chickens. They are kept separate. I’ve been using BackYardChickens for at least 2 years now for the valuable information. I’m happy to have finally signed up!

Hello, Jessica, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
I'd love to see pictures of the coop you built.

Thank you! Here is an image of our coop/run. I’m also building a small chicken tractor to give them more space.
