I am a former city lady and have moved to the countryside. This is my first year raising chickens and am constantly looking up info so I don't mess this up. I had 12 chickens, 4 each of Buff Orpingtons, Rhode Island Reds and Barred Plymouth Rock. They are just 6 months old and am getting from 6 to 11 eggs a day. I did loose one of my Rhode Island Reds this morning. We noticed her limping and staying to herself, so we put her off by herself not knowing what might be the issue and maybe should have caught it earlier but anyway she is now buried beneath a tree out past the hayfield. Otherwise, they have all been healthy. My friends tease me and tell me my chickens are spoiled, but ma just running on prayers I change out the water twice a day, I feed them a layer pellet and crumble mix and throw down some scratch in the late afternoon to get them back in their yard. Otherwise, they are generally out foraging in the yard in the morning or afternoon. Am not sure I do everything right but keep trying. As we go into winter in Iowa am not sure what I am all supposed to do or maybe not anything different. if there are any suggestions from other members on the do's and do not's would love to hear from you.
