Hello!

My name is Ruben, 31 years old and living in Romania, but I'm from The Netherlands! We are working here as missionaries and since two years we own our own house with a (small) backyard (it's actually mostly in the front of the house). I live here together with my wife and 1yr8m old daughter.

A few months ago we came up with the idea to get some chickens. Today we got our 5 baby chicks after preparing for their arrival for a few weeks. I found a lot of useful stuff on this website! Thank you all!

I found a nice plan to build a chicken coop with a small run. We plan on keeping just 3 chickens, the two that are too much )we will find another place for. I don't know how it is in other countries, but here in Romania it is, you get a "mixed breed" that lays eggs or the meat chickens.

Below I will attach some pictures of the chicken coop and describe a little bit of what I'm doing. I really like to build stuff, so this chicken coop is a lot of fun.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Very much really new to this haha.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

We have 5 baby chicks.

(3) What breeds do you have?

Is it bad, that I don't know?

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

I don't know yet, but right now I love how my daughter just gets all happy when she looks at them, and I think i'm gonna love the part of inventing new stuff on how to keep the coop a good place for them.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

Building stuff and I lead the production team in our local church! Lights, sounds, projection, my thing! haha

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

Mostly I shared here!

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

I came across this website through Google and love all the information and all the different chicken coops to just check out!

Some pictures of our first day!

I put bedding in the "brooder" after those pictures and they move around the whole brooder, sometimes they try to sleep but then our lovely daughter wakes them up again haha. Our daughter is now sleeping, and the baby chicks also get some shut eye right now. I never new they sleep like almost "laying down" haha.

I will try to make some good pictures, maybe someone can even tell me what breed we have haha.

The chicken coop build
If i need to make a different thread for this let me know, but it's just so you know where the chickens will live! :)

This is what should be the final coop.

Here you can see some of the walls I'm building:

wall_insulation2.jpeg front_frame.jpeg two_walls.jpeg wife_painting.jpeg

I am putting insulation in the walls because it can get cold here during the winter (-30 degrees celsius) and hot during the summer (+40 degrees celsius).

As you can see I have put an extra window above the laying boxes, I put hardware cloth in it and during the summer I will make a window that can be opened and closed when needed. Still a work in progress.

Any questions or critics? More than welcome!
