Hey everyone! I have been using this site since we got our first chickens last August. Those two have unfortunately passed on due to predator attacks (we have a very secure coop now). We have 4 back yard chickens in Texas, A Cinnamon Queen, IDA Brown, Easter Egger, and a Sapphire gem. The EE and Sapphire are still teenagers, and we hope to get eggs by the new year! A huge thanks to all the people helping out their chicken-loving friends on this site!:hugs

Hello--glad you decided to officially join after a year of lurking lol!

It's always tough to lose chickens, but it looks like you've learned a lot that will help your new flock of gals have a happy, healthy life. The good news is your new ladies are all hybrids who are known for starting early and being egg laying machines, so expect a lot of omelettes in your future!

Thank you for those encouraging words! Our older ladies have slowed a little in the Texas summer heat, but are really good layers.

Howdy!!!!

Haven’t had the pleasure of ever having an Ida brown or cinnamon queen.... but sapphires and Easter Eggers I can relate to. I love my sapphires. Last flock had EE hens that served me well.
One of our first ones was an EE and we loved her so much. A truly devastating loss. Our CQ has the most fun personality!

Sounds like you had rough start -- I lost three of my first four hens to a mink and have, like you, improved coop security.

Of your breeds, I also only have experience with the EEs and the Gems. In fact, those four live together in one of my (too many) coops and dutifully lay year round. The Gems lay giant eggs and one of the EEs lays a lovely green egg. Her sister's eggs are a pale tan but both are beautiful birds.

Hope everyone is producing for you by the new year! Welcome to BYC!
