Hi! My name is Emily, and I just made an account today to ask some questions.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

I’ve had chickens for about 2-3 years now, but I’ve been interested in keeping some since I was a teenager (I’m currently 22)

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

4, three hens named Juniper, Athena and Eglantine, and and one cockerel names Gizmo that I recently rescued (juries still out on whether or not he’ll be a permanent family member, it all depends on if he and my girls can get along, he’s in quarantine right now but I really hope it all goes well)

(3) What breeds do you have?
My hens are partridge chanteclers, and my rooster is a Plymouth Rock (allegedly haha).

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

Observing them and their behaviour, making them happy, cuddling them, and I quite enjoy the physical aspect of chicken keeping.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

Im a casual birder, I’m really into animal husbandry and welfare in general, and I play video games casually

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I also have a chinchilla named Duchess. I still live with my family, so I also live with my parents’ dog Garnet (Vizsla), my sister’s dog Tanner (Manchester terrier), my mother’s Uromastyx Opal, and my mothers rabbit Orion.

My first two chickens, Faverolles pullets names Jasmine and Ginger, unfortunately had cutaneous Marek’s disease (I didn’t know) and had to be euthanized, but I’m glad they had decent life until then. I also had a fourth Chantecler hen, Rue, who had to be euthanized this spring due to EYP that wasn’t responding to treatments.

I currently work part time as a boarding animal care assistant and aide-tech at a veterinary clinic for birds and exotic animals (thank god for the employee discounts is all I can say!), and I am doing a bachelors in environmental science and wildlife biology at university, hoping to become an ornithologist. When I graduate I plan on rescuing at least one parrot, and in the far future possibly rescuing roosters and attempting a bachelor flock if I have the means to.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

I’ve actually known about BYC for nearly 10 years, since I was 12-13 when I first started getting into chickens. At the time chickens weren’t in the cards however, and I adopted my dearly departed quaker parrot Quincey instead, which I definitely don’t regret because she was my heart animal, but I’m glad to finally have chickens :)
