Northern Nevada
Hello from northern Nevada, city of Sparks! I have lurked here off and on for several years, ever since my city began considering legalizing backyard chickens. I stumbled onto here while researching the issue. My mom and I were involved from the start, but the new urban agriculture ordinance thankfully passed without too much trouble a few years ago. Because of other things taking priority, we didn't actually acquire chickens until around November of this last year.

Our first five chickens came from my aunt's mixed flock, so I don't know what they are precisely - easter egger/barnyard mutts. Those are some of the neatest looking chickens, though. Only the gray-pastel hen was laying (small pinkish-beige egg) when we brought them home, and now she's stopped for the winter. The others were too young, but should be good to go any time now. One turned out to be a late-blooming roo and has already been rehomed with my co-worker who has horse property, so we're down to four hens.

Other things going on in our small city lot include a yearly vegetable garden, fruit tree espalier project, a greenhouse this coming spring, and an attempt at small-scale beekeeping. The main part of our yard is actually used to grow bearded iris, and we're members of our local iris society.

Besides the four hens, we have two parakeets and three indoor cats.

I'm looking forward to reading and contributing more instead of just lurking!

The roo in the pictures below has already found a new home and was christened "Alfie" by my co-worker. The hens don't have official names yet, but I usually call the yellower one "Topknot" due to her puffy head. The small light gray-pastel is "Loudmouth", dark gray is "Big Blue" and the other is usually just called "Shaggy Red". Loudmouth is having a bad hair day - she decided only her head/neck needed to molt :lau

Hello and welcome neighbor (I live in California 🤓)!
I love your little flock and Alfie is a gorgeous boy! Glad you were able to find him a home. I bet one of the parents was Cream Legbar (based on Alfie’s color and ‘Topknot’s‘ hair.) I haven’t had any CLs myself, but my Olive Egger boy and girl had a CL parent and Zinnia has the hair and Eddie has similar coloring to Alfie’s.
Anyways, welcome and good luck with your babies 🥰!

Thanks for the musings on possible parentage! I have a passing fancy with coat color genetics in horses and other animals, so I've been trying to learn a little here and there on chicken color as well. Not an in-depth study, just learning by osmosis ;)
