I am new. My daughter's family and I have started keeping chickens this year, but have no experience. We have 4 chicks, 2 Speckled Sussex, one Buff Orpington and one Barred Rock. Three of the chicks are very friendly and let us hold and cuddle them. The Barred Rock is more skittish and squawks and tries to fly every time. The chicks are 5 weeks old. The chicks are fascinating to watch and fun to hold. We have two dogs, a Dixie Dingo (not registered) and a Pit mix. I am retired, a casual birdwatcher, amateur artist and grandmother. My grandson, Myca, who has the Barred Rock, also races his Go-Kart at Whiteland Raceway Park, here in Indiana. His little brother, Olly when he is sweet, Oliver when he is not, is 3 and not a lot of help, but very entertaining. My daughter is a working mom with not much time for anything more than kids, dogs and chickens. My son-in-law is a tinkerer and builder of things.
I am hopeful that we can educate ourselves to be good caretakers of our chicks.
