Hello! I started with chickens a little over a year ago. Started with 6 red star hens and one surprise chick which turned out to be a handsome cuckoo marans! He is great at protecting his flock and ever so gentle with his ladies! Over the last year I added an olive egger and easter egger to the flock and incubated/hatched 21 chicks myself (7 roosters which I found new forever homes for them and kept the 14 pullets). Had two hens go broody (my olive egger and one of my red stars) 16 little ones were hatched and only had 3/16 that didn't hatch. I now have the babies running around with their momma hen (6 are 3 weeks old and 10 are 5 days old). I am amazed that I have no problems from the bigger hens and the roosters! I read horror stories about having chicks with the bigger chickens and count myself and flock blessed! Haven't lost a single chicken (knock on wood)! Looking forward to many years of being "that crazy chicken lady"!

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
When you have enough room for your flock, there is no reason to expect a broody hen and her chicks to be attacked by other flock members. My rooster insists on visiting mom during incubation and always bonds with his chicks.
