I am just starting to learn about how to start my own backyard flock, and excited to find this resource and community! I live in Portland Maine, love to garden, sew and be on a lake in the summer. I work at an Interfaith Seminary and as a spiritual counselor as well.
Thank you for providing this great space for learning and connection!

Peace,
Katrina

Hiya, Katrina, and welcome to BYC! :frow You've come to the right place to learn about raising chickens!

Be sure to check this Article tab, that's also a tab up on top. Under it you'll see our Learning Center, Coops, and more!

We'll all strongly urge you to build a coop or remodel a shed over buying a prefab, and to do this before you get the chicks!

What kind are you thinking of?

Hello Katrina, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.

Make sure you learn all about how to design and build a properly sized, ventilated and predator proofed coop and run. You will need lots of time to get that done before getting chicks (if that is how you want to start). If you have the setup complete first, you can brood them directly in the coop with a brooder plate and everyone will be the happier (and healthier) for it.
