Not new to chickens, but new to having an actual sturdy coop and run. Husband won’t allow free ranging bc he hates the mess and prefers that mulch stay in the gardens! Have 9 hens and a rooster (we’ve lost some hens because we inherited elderly ones and they didn’t transition well), and our rooster is a terrific guardian. (Translation: he’s mean. Super mean.)

Happy chickening!

Hiya, Elisabeth, and welcome to BYC! :frow

We free-range, but there are so many that have hawk/eagle and/or predator problems that keep their chickens penned. So at least yours are pretty safe that way.

I'll pass this on for your hubby, though, in case you get more chicks/chickens to replace the ones that passed. Most chickens need approx. 4 square feet per bird in the coop and 15 square feet in the run. That's a suggestion to keep them healthier and prevent picking or other issues due to overcrowding.

Good luck with your flock! We're glad you're here!
