(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
First off, my name's Weylin.
My family had chickens when I was young--maybe 8-11 years old. We originally got them for eggs...but my dad couldn't get past the fertilized egg thing...and so we didn't eat them. They had a pen they'd regularly get out of, and lay eggs in random spots throughout the yard. I of course didn't know any better, and I just liked feeding the chickens *shrug*.
My wife and I bought a nice place back in October with lots of space...and it's been my dream for a very long time now to establish a garden, chickens...the works. We've got a 7500sqft garden laid out, hundreds of transplants going, and a couple hundred more starting tomorrow. It's going to be a busy year
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We don't have any. We'll be ordering hatching eggs imminently, which was my impetus for signing up here. I've browsed this site a number of times in the past when researching breeds as well, and I expect it will be a nice resource going forward too.
(3) What breeds do you have?
We are planning to get Buckeye chickens, and Pilgrim or Cotton Patch geese. If we can't find Buckeyes, we'll probably go with Dominiques.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I always loved how goofy they were. They are just fun to watch, and the ones that are friendly are awfully nice to pet. We're looking forward to eggs, watching them free range on our 37 acres, and eating all the roosters lol.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Too many to count, honestly. It's a problem. I've divested myself of a bunch of them, but I still enjoy hiking, camping, backpacking, kayaking, hunting, fishing, growing mushrooms, gardening, woodworking, painting/drawing, video games, board games and reading.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
My wife and I are both engineers by training. She currently works as an engineer; I have been renovating and selling houses for the last few years, a commercial salmon fisherman in Alaska before that, and an environmental engineer. Now I'm working on setting our homestead up for future success. We live in northern Minnesota and bought a wonderful home with ~40 acres and 1400ft of riverfront. We've worked long and hard for this, and are really excited to dig in and make this place home!
We have two standard poodle puppies, who are closing in on 6 months old now. They are happy dogs with loads of space to run around
They are named Olive and Ginger; they are siblings, and yes, they are hard to tell apart lol.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I touched on this a bit earlier. I'm looking to have folks to talk to about chickens, to ask questions, and to source some hatching eggs!
