Hi All!
I’m new here, and fairly new to chickens - We acquired 19 chicks straight run. At the time we were told they were two weeks old, but through my research I suspect they were closer to 3 weeks old (so that would make them currently 7 weeks old). Our hope is that half are hens, and I’m now starting to be able to tell apart some roosters (you’ll see me asking about roo confirmations in the gender threads). Our chicks are from Barred Rock hens, the roosters that fathered them vary…Dominant Copper, Giant Cochin, Light Brahma/Cochin, and dominant Copper/Easter Egger… So a flock of mixed Backyard chicks!
Of all my chicks, I have my favorites, specifically one that I instantly fell in love with! I knew he was a boy the moment we got the chicks and he is the reason for my username… Obsidian! We technically are restricted on keeping roosters if any neighbors complain, but my hope is that he will be a good boy and my neighbors will
so he can be the exception of my flock! So far my favorite aspect of raising the chickens is how chatty they are, and how the personable ones will fly to us and shoulder perch. Obsidian isn’t a confident flyer so he doesn’t do that, but he allows me to pick him up and will sit pretty in my hands enjoying pets
I’m a stay at home mom, and my husband is a Wildland firefighter. My hobbies are art, reading and raising animals - I breed Sphynx cats and Boa Constrictors! I’m happy to have found this site, happy to be here! Thank you to those who already have commented on my posts confirming suspected Roos in my flock. I’m sure I’ll be around asking more questions and seeking chicken knowledge!
Thanks for reading!
