Hi! I'm a new chicken mom in Southeastern PA, USA. In May 2025 I got 2 Rhode Island Red and 2 Rustic Rock pullets. I did lots of research before choosing those particular breeds and am very happy with them! When they were chicks it was very easy to tell them apart but as they got older they each started to look like their breed sister, so I bought this pack of colored bracelets/bands to tell them apart. I don't have grandkids yet, but I have plenty of great-nieces and nephews who love the chickens so I let them choose their names. My 4 ladies are now named Cupcake (RR - red), Muffin (RIR - green), Olivia (RIR - purple), and Batman (RR - blue).
I think chickens are very fun! And even though my husband wasn't happy when I brought them home, he is highly entertained by them. Yes, I'm the mom that bought all the bells and whistles (literally) and they like playing with the toys. Other than them being fun, I like the idea of getting back to the basics. I like the idea of raising my own eggs, and my 2 kids LOVE the free eggs! I also grow vegetables, but not to the extent that I don't still have to buy some. My neighbor is my chicken-sitter because his wife won't let him get chickens yet. He feeds them when I'm out of town and he gets paid in free fresh eggs. He and I also want to get a goat! My dream is to buy a farmette one day and grow all the vegetables I need, with room left over for the chickens and goats to all free-range!
I found BYC because I was constantly googling chicken stuff and the wonderful AI that is FB kept throwing your posts at me. I'm very glad it did, but I prefer to interact with your website. I would guess I discovered BYC about a year ago when I started my research but I joined today because apparently I had not joined previously. I wanted to ask a question but it didn't recognize my login!
I'm happy to be a part of your community because I've already learned so much!
