Hi, my name is Bill. I have a wife, Susan, three children, 4 dogs, 4 cats, and 1 bearded dragon. We are trying to add some new family members. Susan and I are looking to get some chickens for our country acreage. I have some questions that I hope some of you more experienced "chickeners" could answer. I have built a coop that is approximately 8 feet wide by 8 feet wide. I would like to get 20 - 30 chickens, but I don't want to overcrowd them if there is not enough space. Also, the type of chicken I really would like to get are called Golden Comets. I have read they are fairly docile, especially with young children. Does anyone have any suggestions as where I could get them, or do you know someone who has any for sale? I live in the Newark Ohio area and as long as the drive is not too far, I would be willing to pick them up. Thank you and I hope my wife and I make some good friends on here.

Welcome to BYC......You could comfortably house 16 chickens in an 8x8 coop....it is recommended to have 4 sq feet for each chicken in the coop and 10 sq feet per chicken in the run.

from NJ! Chickens are addicting! If you can't find anyone close by to get your chickens from, you could order from a hatchery. Many hatcheries have a minimum order of 25 chicks. You can also be sure to order just pullets if that is what you are looking for. Good luck!
