Hello BYC Community-
I recently fufilled a 20 plus year dream of starting my own backyard flock. I purchased 5 Rhode Island Red pullets from our local feed store this past Friday, so I guess I can say I have accomplished step 1. They currently reside in our basement family room in a brooder that I made out of an old Large size pet taxi. Itty Bitty the cat has since spent countless hours sitting on top of the brooder peering at them upside down through the door- this caused some disturbed peeps at first, but now they just ignore her.
My husband just retired from the Army this past fall and our town recently passed an ordinance allowing up to 5 hens within city limits-just the breaks I had been waiting for!
I found your wonderful site through a google search on caring for chicks and have been hooked ever since. I am looking forward to trying many of the wonderful tips I have read on here-and hopefully some day I will have some contributions of my own. I have also subscribed to Nambroth's Flock and am a Huge Derp fan!
