I've lurked long enough and decided it was time to officially join now that we've hatched eggs to chicks and experienced our first egg! I'm in rural south central PA after being born and raised in NorCal.

I had chickens growing up, but discovered it's a different experience when you're the responsible adult in charge of it all. We're surrounded by Amish country and purchased 6 tetra tints last March.

They mostly free range our wooded acreage, but after losing one to an eagle a few weeks ago, we've kept them confined to their coop/run until the baby eagles have flown the nest and their parents aren't looking for food quite as often.

I've been so thankful for all the experience I've found here. Hopefully I can contribute as I gain experience myself!

Greetings form N. California! Wow, eagles! It's nice to know that the populations are recovering so well, but not so nice for the chickens.

We watched a webcam of an eagle pair raising 3 eaglets (Decorah Eagles). Very cool eagle's view, high up in a tree in Iowa farm country. I always wondered if the eagles would take a chicken. Now I know. Poor chicken.

My family also had chickens when I was young, but you're right about the feeling responsible part. Nice to know that there's so much help here if we need it.

Best wishes!

It's refreshing to hear from someone who's first response to a predator attack is not "Kill It!" I am surrounded by predators and have only lost birds one time - when the chicken coop door was left open overnight. Enjoy your eagles while they are still around.
