Hi, I am brand new to this forum and I am looking forward to learning ang getting advice before I get my chickens. I am excited for ths new adventure and I m having hard time choosing a breed. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am looking for egg layers who are friendly, not noisy, and okay to free range in the garden without wanting to go on a spree through the neighborhood.

Hello and welcome to BYC

Do you want big chickens or smaller breeds? White, brown or colourful eggs? Lots of eggs or not? Pretty or plain chickens? Have a look in the reviews section. I had a look there recently and it's very helpful! Our members did a good job.

Sumi, I am going to get standards instead of bantams. It is just my husband and I and I am not too particular about egg color. Any would be great as I am new to this and these will be my first chickens so I am just excited. I. have actually been on the review section for a couple of days and decided to open an account for myself last night. I know my husband wants a Buff Orpington so I was looking at Rhode Island Red and a blue laced red Wyandotte. I would like to have a pretty girl ith our plain (but still pretty) buff O. Thanks for the welcomes

Glad to have you aboard!!! (from Pacific NW)
I love Plymouth Rock/Barred Rock. They are friendly and not to noisy. Actually VERY friendly, mine let me pick them up, I have recently reviewed them here, Barred Rocks are friendly and perfect for anyone. They won't make too much noise. I think Leghorns tend to make more noise because they are a smaller chicken that still produces a regular-sized egg, and sometimes they will make a small amount of noise getting an egg out.

!

In my experience, it really depends on the chicken... But I haven't even my flock yet. I think Buff Orpingtons are really sweet. And silkies. How I love silkies <3 lol
