Hi all, I am a total newby to all of this but love this site so thought I would join up. I have six hens that are a little over six months old and I love them dearly! With one Plymouth Rock, one Orpington and four Americaunas we have a busy coop! I just got my first egg yesterday afternoon and felt so proud! Goofy, I know! I look forward to learning lots here!

Hello and welcome to BYC

Congrats on your first egg! And no, you're not goofy. You should've heard me when I got my first one. My DH thought something was wrong with the chickens

Enjoy!

Greetings!

We just found this site and have found tons of needed info.

My husband and I moved back to "town" and never thought we would be able to have chickens again. Then our little town just south of Colorado Springs decided to come up with a brilliant idea.... CHICKENS ARE LEGAL!!

We are able to have up to 10 hens (sorry roo guys.. you aren't welcome). So it has started.

We purchased 4 pullets from the Big R and because the girls know me there, threw in a crippled little pullet to hopefully give her a chance. The babies are now 10 days old! After making the little cripple a cast and working with her foot, you can no longer tell which one she is other then she is the tiniest little bit smaller then her sisters and is probably a day or so behind in feather development.

Having the most delightful husband

, he is attaching my new/reborn insanity with a vengeance.

After spending hours going over different coop types, we settled on one and the mad"nest" began!

I have been taking daily pictures and will share them soon. This is going to be the coolest of cool coops! As per his m o, Hubby is always having function and ease of cleaning in his thoughts.

He has lined the floor with a vinyl sheeting material we have used behind our tubs in out grooming shop.( We also show dogs and have a business with 4 groomers working in our shop). This is very durable and is water proof and very easy to clean. He then caulked all the edges to prevent water getting under the floor. We are also going to use this material in the nest boxes and the poop shelf.

The coop will have electric and he is running a water line. He is even putting the cutest little porch light over the egg boxes (exterior of course for ease of gathering the eggs).

Today we hope to get it shingled and finish up the doors. We have the windows and hinges on order so will have to wait for them to get here. We figure we have several weeks before the babies outgrow their brooder in the house. Which gives us time to spoil them rotten!

We have plenty of questions and without finding this site would have probably made a lot of mistakes.

Thanks for all the help!
