I'm new to the site and new to raising chickens. I'm currently raising broiler chicks but next month I'm beginning raising laying hens. I grew up on a farm and had dozens of chickens growing up and now I'm excited about giving my family the same experience I had!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. What kind of laying hens are you planning on getting?

I'm actually in search of silkies, blue fizzles, and polish chicks. I live eastern Washington and would like to find sexed chicks vs buying straight run.

Welcome to BYC. Actually none of them are considered good layers. Silkies generally do make very good broodies. When they are broody they will sit on eggs and hatch them, if they are fertile. Silkies are also one of the most difficult breeds to sex. Usually they cannot be sexed with any accuracy before 4-5 mos. of age, and sometimes not till they either crow or lay eggs. If someone tries to sell you a quaranteed female (or male) at an early age, walk away from them. Unless you don't mind being disappointed. Or having unwanted roosters that are difficult to rehome.

You may want to check out the "Silkie thread," just put that in the search box and it will come up. Loads of silkie photos and many folks with a lot of experience with the breed.
A great place to ask your questions.

X2 on drumstick diva. Silkies, Fizzles, and Polish are not good layers. If you want really good layers you need to consider going with Black or Red Sex Links (which are egg laying machines), or Black Australorps, or White Leghorns (if you don't mind the high strung and flighty temperament of Leghorns).

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! X3 on them not being very productive on the egg front. I have mainly polish and although mine are good layers (I say good but I mean good for the breed) they don't produce as many eggs as my Amber link. Polish can be very sporadic layers sometimes laying well and other times not for days. They are more of an ornamental/show breed of chickens. I started my chicken journey with red sex links or warrens as they are called over here in the UK. They were super egg layers and very productive.

Wishing you the very best of luck and enjoy BYC :frow

There are several chick selectors around that can help you choose the breed(s) you want for egg laying. Here are a couple you can check out:

Also, this chart gives some great information on breed characteristics:

Whichever type of chickens you get, hope you enjoy them. Nice to have you here!
