Hello everyone! My name is Jason, I'm from the UK and I'm new to keeping chickens :) I've got 12 fertilised eggs coming that will be here in a few days. I don't have an incubater yet because I'm not sure what I should do.. should I build one myself or buy a ready made one? I've got spare lights and heating equipment from the reptiles I keep. What would be best? I'd prefer not to go out and spend loads on an incubater, but I will if it's the best thing to do. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks! :)

Glad you joined!

I've never built an incubator, but there are lots of people on here that have built very nice incubators for very little. If you search the forum, you will find lots of threads on home built incubators, etc.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

I have never built one either. You might be better off purchasing an incubator on your first try. Incubating is something you need to learn as well, no sense in purchasing eggs, using an incubator that is not set up right and you waited 21 days for nothing. I vote for a new incubator. :-)

Good luck with your hatch! Stop by this article in our learning center on incubation to help you get started...https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/hatching-eggs-101

Great to have you aboard and welcome to our flock!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! There are plenty of nice homemade incubators https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/homemade-chicken-egg-incubator-designs-pictures But you are running short on time to make and test an incubator (you need to run it for awhile to be sure it holds temperature etc, and it is usually recommended you start with cheap eggs rather than expensive/shipped eggs in case things go wrong the first few tries.., so I would vote for buying one at this point also especially if the eggs you are getting are important to you..

I vote for a new incubator. I don't think you could build one fast enough for the eggs you have coming. It takes a lot of tinkering & time to get the refine results. I'm assuming you paid for eggs being shipped to you. Wouldn't want to trust those to a homemade incubator - since you never made one before.
