lots of predators around that early in the morning. Though nowadays I've seen raccoon, oppossum and fox during the day. If they are hungry enough or have babies to feed, they get much more daring. If they score an easy meal,

owls are also head eaters... but not sure why it would eat mid day...

but Diva is correct, hungry predators know no bounds.

Thanks, guys, for all your ideas and suggestions. They really have helped. I assure you, it has nothing to do with the time they are let out. I have let them out at that time every day for the past ten years. There hasn't been a single death because of it. Also, I have a shed over my portable coop and it is surrounded by round hay bales on 3 sides so there is no way that rain, snow, or wind can get into the coop. Inside the shed/haybale shelter, they have at least 250 sq ft of area to roam.
