I just came home to find one of my baby chicks laying dead in the coop. I just introduced 14 6wk olds to my flock through a fence for 2 weeks and after being able to walk around together they seemed to be doing fine. I only noticed a bit of feathers missing off of some little ones but no chasing or attacks that I witnessed.
She was missing majority of her feathers when I found her body but there was no blood or any sign of her being killed. However, there were intestine like things coming out of her rear. There was still no blood though. She seemed fine up until today.
Does anyone know why this happened or what the cause was? Could she have gotten squished by a bigger chicken?

Monitor closely. It sounds as if the older birds may be pecking/cannibalizing the 6 wk olds. I seriously doubt that she was squished by the older birds.

That’s what I thought because of the missing feathers but I’m confused since she wasn’t bleeding anywhere. Should I separate the older chickens from the younger ones for another week so this doesnt happen again?

Do you think she could’ve fallen off of the roost or gotten pushed off and somehow died? Some of our roosts are around 6 feet off the ground and I saw a few of the chicks trying to jump
up there a few minutes ago.
