After cleaning this area up, we intend to make this side area our 2 chickens coop and run. What is this smartest and easiest way to protect these girls in this area?
Top the area off in chicken wire?
Could I then fit a few crates inside a changing table with a ramp and call it a coop?

I would suggest a couple things...first, whatever you call the coop, make something that is roomy enough for your number of chickens...it is recommended that you allow 4 sq. ft. per bird in the coop and 10 sq. ft. per bird in the run area. Make the coop something with nest boxes, make sure it has ventilation, and make doubly sure you can secure it at night. Along the fence on the left you might put down (or maybe bury from the other side) some hardware cloth so predators can't dig under. You might also consider a "roof" of some sort to keep out flying predators. Sounds like a lot of work, I know, but better than losing all your birds to coyote or hawk. Good luck to you!
