We have a 4x6 coop that is currently home to 12 BO's. They are only 3 weeks old (today) so they have plenty of room...... currently.
What is a 'good' size for that many....?
somehow it was built smaller than it was suppose to be..... While I was @ work

I think we'll be adding an addition this summer.

That's the right size for 6 birds. If you live where it gets super cold (or super hot) and they have to spend time locked inside, you'll probably want more than the average 4 sq ft per bird. Having too many chickens in a smaller space creates aggression problems as well as moisture/poo management issues.

I agree. That's a minimum space for 6 chickens. If you have banties they count as 1/2 a chicken. Sounds like it's time for an add on. LOL. Don't feel bad, I started with 12 chickens in a 6x8 coop. I now have 21 chickens and had to add on. I added a 12x6 coop and divided it in half so i can keep 2 breeds pure for breeding purposes. Good Luck.

BTW...when you add on oversize it because you will most likely end up with more chicks.

My coop is 4X8 and my twelve LARGE hens have plenty of room/roosts/nests. They free range during the day and are only locked up at night though. I do clean it once a week and that keeps it "petting zoo" clean.
