I feel so silly making all of these posts but now something else has me worried. Its like each day there is a bird doing something different that seems off.

I now have 1 approximately 14 weeks old Australorp who is not wanting to eat and is acting lethargic (laying down a lot, not scratching around, but still moving around a little bit). I noticed yesterday, but figured she was just hot (its been in the mid 90s here). I brought her inside yesterday for a bit to cool off, it seemed to help a little. She was still acting sluggish but ate some food when offered an drank some water.

Today its more of the same, but now she seems to have even less of an appetite. Its almost like eating is uncomfortable. I wet some of their normal food to make a mash. She pecked at it a little, and when she did eat a few little bites she started gagging afterwards. The gag looked like what the bird is doing in this video:
It looks like the person who posted is asking about gapeworms. She did this maybe 3-4 times and stopped. First and only time I've seen her do it, hasn't done it sense.

I now have her inside, did an inspection. Feet, feathers, eyes, nose all look good. No poopy bottom, though yesterday the only poops I saw from her were a cecal (looked normal) and some wet diarrhea (again, figured it was the heat). Today there's been more diarrhea.

Her crop feels completely empty. I don't think she's eaten anything. I've had her in a carrier in the house for about an hour now with some water, a small bit of her food, and a couple of grapes just to see if she'd try them. She made a couple of pecks at the food but didn't really eat. Did eat the grapes, albeit sort of slowly and strange. She would take a couple of bites, then stop almost like she was resting and close her eyes, then pop back up and take another bite. She did not gag after eating the grapes.

Does this sound like anything?

A picture of a poop from today from inside the carrier (I know one isolated picture proves nothing, but just in case):

I panicked and put everyone back on Corid JUST in case since its the only thing I have on hand and could think to do. A fecal was done (on a sample from a different bird but one she lives with) earlier this week and came back negative.

I had two bird seeds who shared some of those symptoms. They first one was lethargic for a few days, and didn’t bite want to eat. We brought her inside but unfortunately she died the next day. The other had s some kind of stroke where her wings were drooped and she couldn’t uncurl her feet. That second hen wasn’t lethargic at all, and was very hungry, but she didn’t get better. She was gasping just like in the video. I think it means she is unable to breathe or in pain. We had to put the second one down. PLEASE CHECK UNDER HER WINGS, AROUND HER VENT AND THIGHS FOR MITES OR LICE!
Something might even be caught in her throat?????IT could be some kind of disease, I’m not sure. Goodluck!

I feel like such an idiot.

It was the heat, it had to be. After a few hours inside she started to cluck and get irritated in the carrier, so I let her out. Gave her more food and water and she went right back to eating/drinking as normal. I kept her inside until sundown and she was totally fine, even had normal poops.

This morning I went to check on everyone and they were doing ok, everyone ate, but they were all gasping like she was yesterday. Uh oh. Heat is going to be in the high 90s/low 100s today with a humidity of 50+, which isn't great. So I went into overdrive and drug out an old window AC unit to put next to the coop.

This seems to be working. I moved it back closer to the roosting bar and they've all been sitting in front of it. I even managed to get a video of the pullet who I was worried about doing a gasp like yesterday, but seems to be doing so much better:

Bad update. The pullet in question has been ping ponging up and down all weekend, and this morning couldn't/wouldn't stand and was was having head tremors. She's been inside in a carrier for the last 48 hours, only eating boiled eggs and some electrolyte water. She was eating just fine last night, but this morning she just seemed to take a massive nosedive.

She's at the poultry vet. I had a bad experience last time with them but its all I know to do to possibly save her.

Further bad update, the vet did an xray and her liver is enlarged and she's having some bad neurological symptoms (head bobbing and tremors).

There's so many things that could be wrong. She brought up Mareks, but I know all of these birds have been vaccinated.

Its probably selfish but I'm going to try. Since we don't know what's wrong we're going to try a broad spectrum antibiotic just in case its bacterial. If she passes, we will do a necropsy.

Final sad update, in case anyone experiencing something similar ever finds this thread in the future. She passed away. The vet is going to do a necropsy for me.

Hi!

Sorry for all that you had to go through. What did the necropsy show?

We ended up sending her to the state vet lab for the necropsy. The findings didn't indicate one specific cause, but indicated she had a very bad infection that caused multiple organ failure.

She didn't have tumors or any of the specific signs from Mareks, but that's actually what we're assuming since the farm I got the birds from apparently had a back breakout around the time I got my chickens. I got in touch with several other buyers who's birds died shortly after mine and their necropsy results did indicate Mareks.

So sorry! What a terrible experience. Thanks for getting back to me!
