HELP bloody poop Update: Definitely Cocci, please help

I was cleaning the coop and on the roost bar was a dried poop with an obvious blood ring around it. This was two days ago. I haven't seen anything else, but it would be difficult to see in the shavings and sand. Chickens are acting fine. The door to the run has been open the last few days, (new event) but they take infrequent short visits out there. There could certainly be small bits of wire from the fencing that they could have eaten. Is this something I should do something about? Something I should watch? What am I looking for?

im not completely sure, but i think sometimes there is blood in it. from what ive read its normal every so often, but hopefully someone more experienced will chime in, as im not sure

Need more info, please. How old are the birds? Are they on medicated feed? Have they been vaccinated?

In the meantime...I think you could put your mind at ease over the wire eating idea. If a bird did do that (and I think it's unlikely) the damage would be done in the crop, proventriculus, or gizzard. It wouldn't cause red blood in the stool. Besides, if something like this did happen, you wouldn't be wondering who was responsible for the bloody poo. The wire eater would be obviously sick.

like motherjean said, need to know how old they are if they are very young it could be cockcidious(dont know how to spell that) but it will kill young birds if left untreated, treat them with slufer drugs like sulfaquien, good luck.

ANYWAY.....

I found another bloody poop today. This one was diarrhoea with fresh red blood in it, kind of stringy blood. When I went back to take a picture it was gone (as though someone ate it?

) But there are small red smears on the poop board. I searched inside the coop in the shavings but didn't see anything else.

The chickens are 13 weeks old and are eating medicated starter/grower and plain water. They did not get any vaccinations. They get watermelon and hardboiled eggs. There is a little grass in their run and I let them out for an hour yesterday in the evening to free range. They have only recently been going outside.

We have 16 chickens in a 11 x 12 space. Sand outside and deep litter method inside. I have poop boards but they are too close to the roosts so they started sleeping on them. I put them on the floor. I scrape the poop and wash down the boards every other day or so.

All the chickens seem fine? We have 2 roos and the dominant one is really bullying the other one and grabbing the hens ALL the time. I don't know if they are stressed out or not. No real feather loss yet.

One Welsummer hen was standing by the bloody poop today but I don't know if she made it. She has always been kind of shy and she did not go outside to free range yesterday. Didn't want to. None of the chickens really go into the run which is bumming me out.

Let me know if there is anything else I can tell you. If I need to treat something I want to treat it before it gets bad.

Cocci can be a concern in younger birds, but it kinda sounds like normal shedding of intestinal lining since you describe it as stringy. Ok, I checked out that page but there was much more blood in my chicken's poop. While I was cleaning out there another one pooped and it was a little glob of poop in a pool of bright red blood. So I went and got some Corid. The bottle says 4.83 ml per gallon of water (16 oz per 100 gallons). But reading through everyones threads it looks like most people have been using 9 ml. WHY?

When the active treatment dose is done (5 days) should I continue them on Corid for the 21 day prevention? Should I have a break in there to give them some polyvisol???

Any help would be appreciated. This is my first illness and I'm very worried.

They are now 12 weeks and just began going outside this last week. Still acting ok although maybe slightly lethargic. Please help!

The dosage for Corid is 1 tsp. per gallon of water for 5 days(change the water and remedicate it each day). I then give 1/2 dose for a week. It has worked for me.

Corid works well and when you are able to start treatment quickly there are often no losses. Easttxchick is giving you good advice, follow it and you should be fine. I wouldn't give any polyvisol after treatment though. You can give them scrambled eggs with a tablespoon or so of powdered milk mixed in and/or some yoghurt (plain/unsweetened) to give them a boost and soothe their tummies.
